Valentine, February 9, 2024 USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Blaine, Brown, Cherry, Keya Paha, Rock, and Thomas counties is reminding producers now is the time to make elections and enroll in the Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs for the 2024 crop year. The sign-up period is open through March 15, 2024, and producers are encouraged to begin working with the county office to complete the process.

You may have grown elephant ears, lilies, dahlias, gladiolus, and caladiums in your garden, but did you know they also thrive in containers? Some summer bulbs grow even better in pots than they do in the garden. These include the exoticlooking flowers of Abyssinian gladiolus, calla lilies, pineapple lilies, and spider lilies.

Just like us, insects spend their winters in different locations. Unlike us, they spend their winters in different stages of development. Some may overwinter as adults, others in their immature stage as grubs, caterpillars, or nymphs, while others will be in the pupal stage like a chrysalis or cocoon. Understanding their lifecycle and location can help us support beneficial insects while managing problem insect pests.

A group of 11 local boys, from third to fifth grade, traveled to Ft. Pierre, SD, Sunday, January 21, 2024 for a five team round robin fifth grade tournament. They were victorious in all four of their games. Game 1 vs Winner Wranglers 32 - 21 Game 2 vs TL Panthers 23 - 16 Game 3 vs Wolverines 12 - 7 Game 4 vs Pierre Wave 22 - 18 Coach Reagle commented, “It was nice to see the boys work through some adversity and come together as a team. This was a total team effort from all 11 boys!”

Students from Valentine High School were selected to participate in the UNK Honor Band and Choir Clinic on January 29, 2024 in Kearney. Grant Springer played in the Honor Band. Marybelle Ward, Sari LaDeaux, and Neeley Cronin were selected for the Treble Choir. Titus Maunu, Patrick Caley, and Devlin Welch were selected for the Festival Choir.

Cherry County 4-H has close to 250 4-H members and 50 volunteers! February is 4-H Month and to celebrate, Cherry County 4-H is hosting their annual Luck of the Draw fund raiser Saturday, February 10, starting at 10:00 a.m. The “Luck of the Draw” will be held in The First Rail building on Main Street. All funds raised by the 4-H youth, leaders, and volunteers will be used for the Cherry County 4-H program. These funds support 4-H activities, programming, workshops, supplies, equipment, clinicians, trophies, ribbons, awards, scholarships, club and project grants, and exhibitor T-shirts.
