IN VALENTINE project update

Some winter work continues. The electrical contractor; IES Commercial, Inc., will continue work on street lighting, as weather allows.

Donations lead to AED purchase

The Thedford Volunteer Rescue Squad routinely receives donations in memory of local residents. In October 2022, Purdum Assistant Fire Chief Mike Moody passed away and his family graciously designated the Thedford Volunteer Rescue Squad as one of the organizations to whom people could make a donation in memory of Mike.

Education Finance Bills announced

LINCOLN – January 17, 2023, Governor Jim Pillen, accompanied by several state senators including members of the Legislature’s Education Committee, announced three priority bills for the Legislative session aimed at increasing the state’s investment in education and reducing school reliance on property taxes.

Proceeds from Ladies Night at Bomgaars donated to Cherry County Hospital

On October 23, 2022, Bomgaars held their annual Ladies Night – A Night of Festive Fun and Fall Shopping. Cherry County Hospital joined Bomgaars to raise awareness of women’s health issues and passed along a 20 percent discount for the ladies in attendance.

A look back at the third quarter of 2022

We look back at the third quarter of 2022 beginning with July and America’s birthday! There was a lot of fun and festivities celebrating our nation’s birth. The annual July 4th parade was sponsored by Liberty Fireworks. The theme this year was Red, White and Blue, We Love You! Following the parade, Leo Brinda Unit #90 had everyone gather at Badger Field where they read the Declaration of Independence. Wreckless Promotions began the annual Demolition Derby with a total of 24 cars. The Lions Club sponsored the annual Richard Sokol, Sr., Memorial 4th of July Fireworks Display, which was held directly following the Demolition Derby at the Cherry County Fairgrounds. Happy Birthday America! God help our country continue to be free!

Valentine Public Library offers deskset video magnifier for visually impaired

A recent partnership between the Nebraska Library Commission and the Nebraska Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NCBVI) has improved services for patrons with low vision at the Valentine Public Library. NCBVI has provided a 20” ONYX Deskset HD CCTV (electronic video magnifier) to each public library location in Nebraska at no cost.

Moisture falls in the area - again!

We’re not given the choice on weather and have to take what comes. Like a very hot, drought filled summer which can see deep, dark plumes of smoke rising due fires. Or winter snow that comes down hastily, creating white out conditions. Neither are ideal. Their benefits are noted however, in the greening of a pasture after a fire with proper moisture, and the greening of spring pastures after sufficient snow moisture.

Lions Club Pancake Feed to be held for Groundhog Day

Thursday, February 2, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m., the Valentine Lions Club will be hosting their annual Groundhog Day Feed. This year’s Pancake and Sausage Feed will be held at the Cherry County Fairgrounds, with volunteers donating time cooking and serving the community.
