Valentine Area Arts Council presents Adam and Cooley

The VAAC would like to invite you to our upcoming event. Adams and Cooley will perform Rat Pack Jazz on Sunday, January 22, at the Valentine High School Auditorium at 6:00 p.m. This performance is offered to the public at no cost. A free-will donation is appreciated.

Jack Frost and fog hang around - all day!

Thursday, January 12, 2023 was a sight to behold - not just in the morning, but all day long. Heavy fog made it difficult to see, and Jack Frost was certainly a beautiful eyeful.

Record breaking snowfall settles over the area

Another snow event impacted Cherry County January 2-3, 2023 with 14.5 inches of fresh snow over the top of what remained from the previous storms. According to NOAA Weather, it was a record breaker with a record precipitation total of .96 inches at Valentine, Monday, January 2, 2023. This breaks the old record of .11 inches set in 1949. A record snowfall of 11 inches was also set January 2, breaking the old record of 2.7 inches in 1975.

LEAD Fellowship applications available for group 42

Lincoln — Fellowship applications for Nebraska LEAD (Leadership Education/Action Development) Group 42 are now available for men and women involved in production agriculture or agribusiness. “Up to 30 motivated men and women with demonstrated leadership potential will be selected from five geographic districts across our state,” said Terry Hejny, Nebraska LEAD Program director.

IN VALENTINE project update:

This week, expect work to complete placement of the Traffic Signals at 3rd & Main. IES (electrical contractor) will mobilize onto project to start work January 9. Work will require periodic traffic closures to allow equipment at the intersection of 3rd and Main. The closure should be of a short duration.

Troopers make 35 DUI arrests, assist 1,300 motorists during holidays

JANUARY 4, 2023, LINCOLN — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed 35 impaired drivers from the road and assisted more than 1,300 motorists during the holiday season as part of the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.

Top five weather events for western and north central Nebraska in 2022

Over the past 12 months, weather conditions across western and north central Nebraska were diverse. Thanks to a hot and dry summer and fall, drought conditions expanded across all of western and north central Nebraska in 2022. Severe thunderstorm events were well below average this past warm season and only three tornadoes were reported over western and north central Nebraska in 2022. The dry conditions also led to numerous small, as well as large range fires across the area. The year ended with cold and snowy conditions in December as a major blizzard impacted the Sandhills and northern Nebraska. This was followed a week later as bitterly cold temperatures spread across the region. Below are the five most notable weather events from the area for the past year.

Governor Pillen announces NDOT Director

LINCOLN – Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen announced his appointment of Vicki Kramer as the next director of the Nebraska Department of Transportation. “Vicki brings broad experience from both the private and public sector to keep moving our state’s transportation system into the 21st century,” said Governor Pillen.
