BBB tips: Navigating New Year financial resolutions

The holiday expenses may be looming on the credit card bill, or perhaps the bank balance is a little lighter from the extra gifts exchanged with family and friends. If this is the year to reduce debt and bump up the savings account, it’s not a bad idea to revisit prior financial goals.

Smith statement on election of Speaker Kevin McCarthy

Washington, D.C. – Rep. Adrian Smith (R-NE) released the following statement after Kevin McCarthy was elected to serve as Speaker of the House of Representatives: “There is no one more qualified to lead House Republicans than Kevin. His hard work and clear vision earned us the majority, and his open-minded approach to leadership paved the way for an open and inclusive process for selecting a speaker. Governing can be messy – especially when you are committed to an open process – and I couldn’t be prouder of the way Kevin led us in these negotiations. I know the 118th Congress will be served well with Kevin at the helm, and every Member who is serious about being productive will have the chance to make their mark on the House agenda.”

Lakeview/Crookston

The storm that hit this area the week before Christmas was one that will be remembered for years. It’s been a long time since there’s been a blizzard that lasted for several days, with the snow, high winds, and extreme cold and dangerous wind chills. Several were out of electricity for some time, which is scary with the subzero temps. There were a lot of helpers in the storm – Vern Walkling made a lot of paths through pastures for people to get out, and Mike Vavra did a lot of work in the north end of Lakeview. Rick Vander-Wey came to the rescue of a young lady stranded in her tractor just east of Ron Pattons, and after getting stuck near the Tinant Ranch, Dwight Logterman and Tim Hand were fortunate enough to spend several nights in the Tinant home waiting out the storm. A large shop building on the Dick and Tom Schneider ranch had one end collapse under the weight of snow. The shop contains ranch equipment as well as the office and storage for Elevate Ergonomics. High drifts were in shelterbelts and along buildings, making for some amazing pictures.
