Public Transportation Services in Valentine began November 15

Panhandle Transit Services (PTS) announced the start of curb-to-curb public transportation services in Valentine, which began November 15. Director of Transportation Jonnie Kusek said they like to begin with a soft start, find out more about the community, the local needs and discover what will workbestwithinasetof perimeters.

Prostate Cancer: Know Your Options

Over my 30 year career as a cancer physician I have witnessed firsthand the tremendous progress in treating cancer patients. There continues to be controversy in the screening and treatment of prostate cancer (PC) for which I am grateful to have the opportunity to share more information with you. PC screening consists of obtaining a PSA and rectal exam, followed by a biopsy if indicated. In 2012, the United States Preventive Task Force (USPSTF) recommended against PC screening. Studies following their recommendations demonstrated a substantial decline in both PC screening and diagnosis of early stage PC, and a subsequent increase in the rates of more aggressive PC. In 2017 the USPSTF reversed their prior recommendation, listing PSA as a reasonable screening test in men ages 55- 69.

BBB Institute partners with Amazon and Capital One to fight scams

The BBB Institute for Marketplace Trust (BBB Institute) is partnering with Amazon and Capital One to help people learn about scams, report them, avoid losing money and/or personal information, by enhancing the capabilities of the BBB Scam Tracker online reporting tool. These new features make it easier for consumers to identify scams and report them while arming partners with more robust data on scammers to better protect consumers.

2022 4-H Horse Show Results

The 2022 4-H Horse Show was held on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at the Cherry County Fairgrounds with 16 youth competing. Youth practiced from May through July on the ranch and in the arena to acquire the skills needed to complete their written and riding skills tests and compete at the show.

Hunters reminded to donate to Hunters Helping the Hungry

Hunters are reminded they may donate harvested deer to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program at seven processor locations in Nebraska. The participating meat processors are: • Amherst – Belschner Custom Meats • Norfolk – R&M Meats • North Platte – Kelley’s Custom Pack • Table Rock – Den’s Country Meats • Franklin – Franklin Locker • Ulysses – The Butchery • Lindsay – Melcher’s Locker Hunters pay no processing costs for deer donated to processors for this program.

James has stepped up and taken a leadership role with the Badger Cast. His help with streaming every home event this fall was a big help.

BADGER OF THE WEEK

Grant Springer, Junior, Cross-Country Junior Grant Springer is a dedicated student-athlete. Grant qualified for the cross country state meet running his personal best time of 17:58.6 at the district meet. His qualifying time moved Grant to 7th on the Cross Country top ten leaderboard. Grant’s success this year came from knowing that miles do matter. Grant began preparing for this season in 2021. He ran track and qualified for the 2022 state track meet. Medaling at most meets and breaking his personal best time, Grant met goals he set for himself this season. When Grant and I talked about his accomplishments this year, Grant said, “Next year a medal.” Grant does not boast, he is a kind,humble role model for his team and other student-athletes. Congratulations, Grant, on being selected “Badger of the Week”.

Remember: Locate check station before hunting during firearm deer

Deer hunters are reminded to locate their nearest in-person check stations prior to hunting during the nine-day firearm season this year. All deer harvested during the November 12-20 season must be accompanied by the hunter and taken to a check station no later than 1:00 p.m.
