Junior anglers needed: Free Summer Fishing Clinics

Valentine-Join the Niobrara National Scenic River, the Friends of the Niobrara, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for a series of Fishing Clinics along the Niobrara River watershed. Four fishing clinics are currently planned for the summer of 2022. Please contact the Niobrara National Scenic River Visitor Center either by phone 402-376-1901 or email niobrara_nsr@nps.gov to ask questions and register.

Niobrara River Challenge continues

Valentine-The Niobrara National Scenic River (NSR) kicked off summer programs and events on May 24, 2022. May 24 is the anniversary of the Niobrara River’s scenic designation by Congress under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. Less than one percent of rivers in the United States qualify under the act.

Gov. Ricketts comments on record-high April tax receipts

Incidents/Arrests On 05/09/2022 at 8:55 p.m., an officer responded to the 900 block of West B Street for a report of a suspicious person parked in their driveway. A 46 year old Valentine woman was arrested on an active Cherry County warrant.

NSP, partners encourage safe travel this summer

MAY 19, 2022, LINCOLN- Law enforcement leaders from several agencies joined traffic safety officials to encourage safe driving across Nebraska this summer. The Nebraska State Patrol and dozens of other law enforcement agencies are participating in the annual Click It or Ticket campaign.

Knispel awarded 2022 Carol McDaniel Teacher of the Year award

Jan Knispel, former Valentine High School English teacher, has been awarded the 2022 Carol Mc- Daniel Teacher of the Year award from Nebraska Writing Project at UNL according to the Nebraska Writing Project website. The Mc- Daniel award was created in 2000 to recognize “a Nebraska teacher who exemplifies the principles for which Nebraska Writing Project stands.” Recipients are chosen through a teacher monitored nomination process. The Carol McDaniel Teacher of the Year is awarded to a “Nebraska teacher who has made a significant contribution to writing education in the state and honors a teacher who has not only taught writing well, but also has inspired other teachers or connected school to community, or publicly advocated for teacher expertise. These are the activities that the Nebraska Writing Project values as its purposes and includes in its vision for Nebraska education.”

Niobrara Council discusses grants and budget

The Niobrara Council met April 28, 2022 at the Peppermill in Valentine. The meeting was called to order at 1:30 p.m. Members who were present: Jason Appelt, Lana Arrowsmith, Karl Connell, Dallas Dodson, Les Hall, Wade Hollenbeck, Mary Mercure (arrived at 1:39 p.m.), Rich Mercure, Mike Murphy, Andrew Steinhauser, Tanya Storer, Mike Tuerk, Scott Wessel, Matt Sprenger, Susan Cook.

Memorial Day Programs to be held in Wood Lake and Valentine

Friday, May 27, The American Legion Auxiliary Leo Brinda Unit #90 invites the public to the annual crowning of Little Miss Poppy at Mt. Hope Cemetery at 6:00 p.m. CT. The short ceremony will be held by the flags. Following the crowning, the American Legion Family invites the public to help place crosses, flags and poppy wreaths on veteran graves, starting at approximately 6:15 p.m. CT. The crosses and flags will be collected on Monday evening, May 30, at 6:00 p.m. CT.
