Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge News

Bison are once again roaming the Refuge along the entrance road near the visitor center. Each spring, bison are moved from the Wilderness Area north of the Niobrara River back into the south side of the refuge. Bison will spend the spring and summer on the south side of the refuge. Within the next week, most of the herd (around 350) will be in the area around the visitor center. Cows will soon be giving birth to calves, and by early May, little red bison will be scattered among the herd. It will be a great time to view bison but please stay in your vehicle as bison can be dangerous, particularly when cows are looking after their calves. After more than two years, the

Commissioners approve 2022-2023 waterfowl recommendations

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved 2022-2023 waterfowl hunting season recommendations at its March 23 meeting in Nebraska City. Staff recommended opening duck season in zones 2 and 4 a week earlier than the 2021-2022 season.

Results of the 11th annual Ainsworth Relays 2022

Cody-Kilgore and Valentine were just two of the school track teams competing at the 11th annual Ainsworth Relays held Friday, March 25, 2022 at Ainsworth East City Park. The temperatures were in the mid 50s with northwest winds of 24-35 mph.

Another successful year for Kids Heart Challenge

March 4, 2022, marked the end of a fund raiser Valentine Elementary School did for the American Heart Association which started February 14. After taking a year off, some first through fourth graders at the elementary took part in Kids Heart Challenge, previously known as Jump Rope for Heart, which is a fund raiser to help the American Heart Association do research in order to help with heart sickness and diseases.
