On Monday, June 13, the Board of Directors of the Middle Niobrara NRD (MNNRD) voted 6-0 to approve modifications to the Rules and Regulations of the MNNRD. Modifications covered the following topics: 1.) Updates to the glossary of terms. 2.) Changes to the current moratorium on new or expanded ground water irrigated acres. 3.) Removal of expired or irrelevant verbiage. 4.) Modify groundwater transfer regulations. 5.) Changes to controls in the Groundwater Quality Management Zones 3 and 4. 6.) Statement of Intent for groundwater quantity controls. 7.) Addition of regulations regarding new certified irrigated acre development. 8.) Addition of regulations relating to chemigation. 9.) Changes to regulations for variance and staff authority. 10.) Modify rule enforcement provisions. A public hearing was held on the morning of June 13, to hear public testimony and comments on the new rule proposals. Three written testimonies were submitted for consideration and were read aloud during the hearing.

Husker Meats hosted the first Steers for Students pilot program at their facility in Ainsworth on Wednesday, June 29. Steers for Students is an educational program geared for the youth of the Sandhills. This program will allow students an educational opportunity to evaluate and grade carcasses of locally grown beef, observe how a packing plant operates and supply their own schools with delicious Sandhills beef.

The 2022 Nebraska Grazing Conference will be held August 9 and 10 at the Younes Conference Center in Kearney, NE with a program bridging grazing lands conservation and management. The conference will begin with a field tour from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the Cottonwood Waterfowl Production Area (WPA) northeast of Bertrand, NE and move to the Linder WPA, which is 1.5 miles from the first stop.

LINCOLN – Governor Pete Ricketts proclaimed “Religious Freedom Week” in Nebraska at a ceremony at the State Capitol. Together with Christian, Hindu, and Jewish religious leaders, the Governor highlighted the right to religious freedom and the social benefits that come from the free exercise of religion.
