City Council lowers tax request and levy

The Valentine City Council met Thursday, September 11, 2025, in the Library Meeting Room. During that meeting the council lowered the property tax request from $430,000.00 to $399,000.00, -7 percent, and the property tax levy from .168007 to .150698, -10 percent, said City Manager Shane Siewert.

Some see threat, others opportunity in proposed shift of management for scenic Niobrara River

LINCOLN — Nebraska would have to dig into its pocketbook if it wants to take over management of the scenic Niobrara River from the National Park Service. That seems clear after officials from Ohio, a state that has a rare “cooperative agreement” tomanagefederally designated wild and scenic rivers within its state, told the Examiner that it spends $1.2 million a year on its state scenic river program.

A summer well spent Sandhills ranch internships conclude for the season

As summer comes to an end, so does the 2025 season of the Sandhills Ranch Internships. Over the past three months, 13 interns have been working on ranches throughout the Sandhills, side by side with experienced ranchers and participating in the daily activities of ranch life.

David Dorsey is the Artist of the Month

Artist of the month for September is David Dorsey a lifelong Nebraska resident, and Valentine resident since 2012. Dorsey is a fulltime artist who displays his work in various shows throughout the state and on a national level.

Reunions are social gatherings wherepeoplewhohaven’tseeneach other for a long time come together, such as family or school reunions, or the situation of meeting again after a long absence. These events provide an opportunity for members of a group to reconnect, reminisce, and create new memories. There are many reunions of various types in every community and is a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and loved ones after a period of separation, to reminisce about past experiences, to update each other and form new bonds as well as celebrating a shared history.

Cody News

Sorry I haven’t had much news lately. In the mad rush of the end of summer/start of fall, it seems like there are three things going on at all times. We have been blessed with some rain this past weekend, hopefully to get a bit of grass growing before the cold sets in. Most of the haying is wrapping up and bales are being hauled into the stackyards as the area starts to winterize equipment for the year.
