Johnny Wayne Grooms, age 71 of Crookston, NE, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at his home near Crookston. He was born July 7, 1955, at Valentine, NE to Johnny S. and Emma (Shelbourn) Grooms.
Johnny was raised on the home place north of Crookston and had many great childhood memories growing up there with his sisters, and good times with their best friends, the Epke kids. Johnny attended grade school at the Rock Schoolhouse and Dist. 16 in Crookston and graduated from Valentine High School with the class of 1973.
After graduation Johnny spent a short time working in Norfolk, NE installing dairy equipment. He then returned home to ranch with his parents and continued ranching until the time of his death. He also worked at Henderson’s IGA for several years. He loved his job and made many lasting friendships during his time at Henderson’s.
Johnny was a cattleman, a beloved brother, uncle, and true friend to many.
Johnny enjoyed long conversations with family and friends. He wasn’t much of a traveler, so many of those talks were by phone. His “watcha doin?” will be missed. When he was in town he could be found socializing at the sale barn, Vets Club, or the Bunkhouse.
He was also a world of knowledge; always our go-to for a name, birthday, or any other facts, especially Husker related.
Johnny spent a lot of his time watching sports on television. He loved the Cornhuskers and St. Louis Cardinal baseball. In recent years he wouldn’t miss a Husker volleyball match, Husker women’s basketball game, or a St. Louis ball game.
Johnny is survived by his sisters, Linda (Ron) Monroe of Valentine, Laurie (Brad) Linabery of Fairmont, NE; nephews, Aaron Monroe of Geneva, NE, Mart (Kari) Monroe of Valentine, Chad Monroe (Tiffany Daugherty) of Valentine, Trent (Kelsey) Linabery of Henderson, NE, Shayde (Katie) Linabery of York, NE; 14 great nephews and nieces; six great-great nephews and nieces. Along with many special friends.
He was preceded in death by parents, Johnny S. and Emma Grooms; infant brother; grandparents, Ray and Lelah Shelbourn, Ed and Anna Grooms.
The family is looking forward to hosting all who knew and loved Johnny at an upcoming celebration of life, which is in planning for the near future.
Memorials may be directed to Leo Brinda Post 90 Vets Club or to the family for later designation.
Sandoz Chapel of the Pines is entrusted with service arrangements.
