The beginning of my last session in the legislature began Wednesday, January 3. Along with the other 16 senior senators, this will be a bittersweet session for us because our time in elected office is limited by our constitution. Our ancestors felt someone should serve their fellow citizens for a time, and then return to being one again. I wholeheartedly agree with this philosophy, but I will miss serving the incredible Nebraskans of the State’s largest and most beautiful legislative district.

W In life, and legislative work, a new year brings new opportunities and new undertakings. As we enter 2024 and the second session of the 118th United States Congress, there is much work to do, and I’m optimistic we can achieve results for the American people.

The hole keeps getting deeper. Remember when I suggested someone should give the governor a shovel so he could dig a deeper hole for himself? That was when he had refused to read a published report on high levels of nitrates on his pig farms because it was written by “someo ne from Communist China.” He subsequently refused to apologize to the reporter with a Chinese surname who is a graduate of an American university and has been working for news organizations in the United States for several years.

Dear Editor, Ensuring the safety and well-being of Nebraska’s kids is our state’s top priority. Providing access to programs that best guarantee the delivery of nutritional foods is vital.

A seizure can be one of the most frightening things for a family member, friend, or anyone to witness. However, for some people with epilepsy, seizures may be fairly common and not unexpected. Roughly one in 10 people may have a seizure at some point in their lifetime.

As my final session in the legislature is about to begin, I am busy making sure I leave the legislature better than I found it. There is one thing I know for certain: Nebraska’s future energy policy should not be based on “renewable” energy.
