Cody-Kilgore welcomed Sioux County Warriors

Cody-Kilgore welcomed the Sioux County Warriors to town Thursday, November 30, 2023 for their first game of the 23-24 season. Cowgirls lost to the Warriors 52-67, while the Cowboys were victorious with a final score of 48-30.

Badger basketball season has begun

On Monday, November 27, 2023 the Badger Basketball teams traveled to Hyannis to play in the Hall of Fame Jamboree games. The Lady Badgers started with a win over the Lady Longhorns. The team averaged 59 percent from the free throw line and 25 percent from the field, leading the boards with 28 rebounds. Although the game doesn’t count towards the season record, the Lady Badgers took the win 34-17. The Badger boys scored 25 points in the first quarter and had a lead of 28 points heading to the half. They ended the night with a win, 70-32.

Wrestling season begins with O’Neill Invite

The Badger’s first wrestling meet of the season began Saturday, December 2, 2023, at O’Neill. The individual invite results for Valentine High School are as follows: 106 - Deklin Titus (3-2) place is unknown and scored 9.5 team points.

Upland hunting the Sandhills – A scientific approach

Melvin Nenneman knows birds. As wildlife biologist for the 71,516 acre Valentine National Wildlife Refuge the past 21 years, he’s become familiar with flying creatures that range in size from the huge pelicans cruising the shallow lakes to minute grasshopper sparrows flittering about the rolling, grass-covered dunes.

Bopp donates to Sandhills Cancer Fund

Madysyn Bopp donated 100 jars of jelly to the Sandhills Cancer Fund as part of her citizenship project for 4-H. She picked, and canned the jelly as well.

Carter P. Johnson Lake and dam to be decommissioned

Nebraska Game and Parks will decommission and remove the dam at Carter P. Johnson Lake at Fort Robinson State Park for the safety of the public. Once the dam is removed, Soldier Creek will be restored to a natural flowing state.

Firearm deer harvest down

Preliminary results from the 2023 Nebraska November firearm deer season show statewide harvest was down 18 percent from 2022 and down 29 percent from the 2018-2022 average. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission expected these results for the November 11-19 season based on several factors that indicated a decline in harvest was coming.

Waterfowl hunters: Do your part to prevent spread of invasive plants

Phragmites, a non-native, invasive, noxious plant, is spreading rapidly along rivers, streams, lakes and wetlands throughout the state. Officials at Nebraska Game and Parks are asking waterfowl hunters to help keep from making the problem worse.

Cowboys end season in first D6 playoff game

The Cowboys traveled to Lincoln Friday, October 27, 2023 for the first round of D6 Playoffs. They were handed a loss by the former State Champions Parkview Christian, with a final score of 8-40.
