Senior Legion Team wins District Championship! Head to state!

Cherry County 4-H Special Foods Competition results

The 2022 Cherry County 4-H Special Foods Competition was held July 14 at the Methodist Church in Valentine. Youth participated in a variety of categories. Older youth with at least three years of experience were required to be in the “advanced” level where they had to use the annual “challenge ingredient”. The 2022 challenge ingredient was ground beef. Youth in the “basic” level could choose any ingredients. After 90 minutes preparing recipes live in front of the judge, the competitors had to plate their foods and present the finished product on a table setting with a complete menu and MyPlate nutrition analysis print-out. They then interviewed with the judge and were questioned on their nutrition knowledge and the judge sampled each recipe. Youth could also chose the table setting-only option where they did the steps above, minus cooking the food. And the day ended on a sweet note with the “cupcake wars” where youth presented their most delectable recipes with a fun theme. Results are as follows:

South Central Ag Lab Field Day set for August 4

Lincoln, July 8, 2022 —Come see what’s going on at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s South Central Agricultural Laboratory (SCAL) field trials on Thursday, August 4. The field day includes topics focusing on improved crop production and profitability. The event is designed so guests can customize their day to select the tours they are most interested in. Southwest state parks temporarily banning campfires

Some state recreation areas in southwest Nebraska are temporarily banning campfires as drought conditions have triggered extreme fire danger. The following Nebraska Game and Parks Commission areas will have campfire bans until further notice: • Enders State Recreation Area • Gallagher Canyon SRA • Medicine Creek SRA • Red Willow State Recreation Area • Rock Creek Lake SRA • Swanson SRA Additional parks may be added if drought conditions persist.

Micro-surfacing work in Ainsworth area

Micro-surfacing work began July 20 on N-7 south of Ainsworth beginning at the Calamus River and proceeding south from reference post 8.36 to reference post 17.72, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Dylan Naslund represents Nebraska 4-H at National Shooting Sports Competition

Dylan Naslund from Cody, represented Nebraska 4-H at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Competition in Grand Island, the week of June 27, 2022. Dylan is the son of Adam and Janell Naslund, and Adam is the archery shooting sports instructor for Cherry County 4-H. Dylan was a member of the Nebraska Recurve Archery Team for this year’s competition, coached by Jeff Goble.

Churchill places second at Old West Trail Rodeo

Trula Churchill of Valentine and her gray mare, Moonlight, placed second among the nearly 40 barrel racers at Crawford’s Old West Trail Rodeo over the Fourth of July. They also were fifth in the event at the 2021 rodeo.
