No matter the weather, weeds seem to thrive and reproduce, and if left unchecked, they can overwhelm the garden and gardener. These unwanted plants find their way into your garden as seeds, roots, rhizomes, or whole plants. Seeds can be carried in by the wind, birds, and other animals, or on the soles of shoes. Roots, rhizomes, and even plants hitch a ride in the soil or with plants that we move into the garden. Start early managing weeds in your garden. Smaller weeds are easier to pull and removing them before they flower and form seeds can prevent hundreds of weeds in next year’s landscape. This is not always possible. Weather and busy schedules often limit gardening time, allowing these vigorous plants to overtake the garden.

Lincoln – County fairs, livestock competitions, and rodeos, let people see, experience, and celebrate agriculture on a different level. Since many agricultural events take place during the summer, now is the perfect time for the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) to remind livestock owners to protect their animals and to keep them healthy, especially livestock participating in shows and competitions.

The annual Demolition Derby was held at the Cherry County Fairgrounds, July 4. The results are as follows: Bonestock Compact Singles Feature - 11 total - first place, Layton Sailor; second place, Travis Grosserode; third place, Josh Schubauer; fourth place, Mark Monroe. Mad Dog, Jackson Irwin.

Results of Fourth of July Parade sponsored by Liberty Fireworks are as follows: In the Commercial division, the winner was Henderson’s IGA. In the community or group division the winner was the Valentine Swim Team and the individual category was won by the Roth Family float.

Ogallala-During the June 11 Quarterly Committee meeting for the Nebraska Brand Committee, after the review of annual financials, it was determined that the brand inspection charge will be raised from the current $.85 per head back to $1.00 per head.

Registration is currently being accepted for the Nebraska Senior Games, scheduled to be held from August 1-4, 2024, in Kearney. Men and women, age 50 and over, as of December 31, 2024, are eligible to participate.

Kwynn Graham of Simeon School was named as the first place winner in Class 1 - second and third grade - at the state level in the American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Poster Contest! Her poster will now be entered into the national competition. The local Poppy Poster contest is held annually in the spring and serves as a method to show appreciation to Veterans nation-wide.

LINCOLN – Governor Jim Pillen, the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED), and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) encourage Nebraskans to register for the Ag & Economic Development Summit: One Nebraska. This year’s event will take place August 7-9, 2024, at the Younes Conference Center North in Kearney.

VALENTINE, NE: – Local restaurant Bulldogger’s BBQ will be hosting a visit from America’s Best Restaurants (ABR) in mid-July 2024. America’s Best Restaurants, a national media and marketing company focusing on bringing attention to local, independentlyowned restaurants, will bring its ABR Roadshow to the restaurant on July 15.

Cherry County 4-H was represented at two statelevel competitions held in Lincoln, in mid-June. Jenalee Garwood and Ella Brennemann competed in the Senior Prepared Speech category at the Premier Communication Event.
