Reducing radon decreases exposure to lung cancer

Lincoln – More than 21,000 lung cancer deaths a year are from exposure to radon gas, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Nebraska is third in the nation with the potential for high radon levels behind Iowa and Pennsylvania.

February 5, 2024 – Keep fire safety in mind this Valentine’s Day to safely maintain the spark of a romantic evening. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), that means keeping a close eye on what’s cooking on the stove or in the oven and practicing caution when using candles.

Hedda Matheson wins the Valentine’s Day Card winner

The Chamber of Commerce holds their annual Valentine’s Day Card Contest at the end of 2023. Everyone was invited to draw, sketch, or pen and ink the annual greeting that will be shared with many over Valentine’s Day, February 14. This year, Hedda Matheson was the winner with the above pen and ink letting you know your heart has a friend. She also was the recipient of the $250 prize.

Friends of the Library Puzzle Tournament results

Does the thought of putting a jigsaw puzzle together remind you of a cold, snowy day? A time to slow down and enjoy using a part of your brain that may not normally be exercised? This wasn’t it. It was a fast paced event that ultimately declared Andy Krueger and Marcus Little as winners in the inaugural Friends of the Library jigsaw puzzle tournament.

Lt. Slama celebrates 20 years with VPD

On January 5, 2024, the Valentine Police Department recognized Lt. Jamon Slama for 20 years of service with the Police Department. Lt. Slama began his law enforcement career with the Sidney Police Department. On January 5, 2004, he started his service with the City of Valentine’s Police Department.

Governor Pillen and senators push back against foreign adversaries

Lincoln-Governor Jim Pillen joined state senators in introducing two bills aimed at pushing back against foreign adversarial influence in Nebraska. At the request of the Governor, Senator Barry DeKay (District 40) introduced legislation to modernize laws related to foreign-owned agriculture land.

Nebraska stands with Texas

Lincoln-Governor Jim Pillen joined 24 other Republican governors in a joint statement supporting Texas Governor Greg Abbott and his state’s fight to defend the southern border. “The failure to secure our border has created a massive flow of illegal drugs, national security and terrorism risks, and a humanitarian crisis,” said Governor Pillen.
