After being MIA for 72 years, PFC Dale Thompson is coming home!

The story has been waiting to be told since his death, December 2, 1950, He grew up in Norden, and it’s possible that you, or members of your family, may remember the day a telegram arrived at Mrs. Mabel Thompson’s home in Valentine. It informed her that her son, PFC Dale Thompson, was missing in action, and was dated January 26, 1951.

Valentine City Council hears concerns on youth activities

The Valentine City Council met for their regular meeting, Thursday, June 8, 2023, at the City Library Meeting Room. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. with the following in attendance: City Clerk Deanna Schmit, City Manager Shane Siewert, Council members Kyle Arganbright, Kalli Kieborz, Neil Wescott, and Ross Brockley. Brad Arnold was on National Guard Duty.

VMS and C-K track athletes attend state meet in Gothenburg

Saturday May 13, 2023 Valentine Middle School track and field athletes competed at the Nebraska State Championship Meet held in Gothenburg. Paige Springer, Danika Janssen, Annalena Nelson, Addison Stec, and Clarrah Beebout qualified for the state meet.

Witte and Lurz play in annual West Nebraska All-Star Game

While the West team lost against the East team, it was still an honor for Valentine’s Logan Witte and Ashton Lurz to be selected to play in the annual West Nebraska All-Star Game, held at Bearcat Stadium in Scottsbluff, Saturday, June 10, 2023. The starting time was moved up due to threats of inclement weather.

The possibilities of a convention and wellness center for Valentine via the former Shopko building

Patrick Moore, owner of Goodlife Architecture, shared several floor plans about the proposed convention center from the former Shopko building, Friday, June 9, 2023, at Valentine City Hall, at 5:22 p.m. There were several plans on display, which began with the least amount of capital to the most. A drawback for the building, is that the ceiling height isn’t regulation for the courts, so there were options that included building an add-on gym, with separate entrance.

Cherry County Planning Commission hears testimony for swine finisher southeast of Valentine

The Cherry County Planning Commission held a public hearing on Conditional Use Permit #00123, Tuesday, June 6, 2023, with the hearing opened at 4:45 p.m., in the Cherry County Courtroom. The request was from TK Angus/ Tim Marlatt, who wants to build a swine finisher housing 4,999 head over 55 pounds in the following legal description: SW 1/4 SW 1/4 Section 13, Township 33 N, Range 27W Cherry County, NE, which is approximately two miles north of Highway 20, on a private road with an easement already in place.

Sand Painter Artist of the Month

Jenalee Garwood has been selected as the Sand Painters Art Club Artist of the Month for June. Jenalee is a 15 year old artist, not specializing in any specific medium, but finds her strengths in basic pencil portraits. Aside from this, she enjoys digital, oils, and acrylics. Typically her artwork displays people with very present emotions ranging from pure joy to raging anger.
