As part of their efforts to ensure kids have access to healthy meals during the summer months, Valentine Community Schools is pleased to announce their summer meals site will be serving kids and teens again this year. Starting May 30, all kids and teens 18 and under can receive lunches free of charge. No application, registration or proof of residency is required.

Mid-Plains Community College hosted a dynamic, physically challenging training event this past week. Students consisted of members from the Valentine Police Department, National Park Service, Cherry County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Cherry County Jail and the Valentine Community Schools.

No idea was too small, wrong, or too big for that matter, Thursday, May 4, 2023 when citizens stopped by the old Shopko building to hear and share their thoughts on a new community center. There was a lot of conversation about the uses for the building. However, there are only 90 days to figure out the consensus, uses, and feasibility.

Friday, May 12, 2023, starting at 8:30 a.m. Valentine area community members are invited to help in a Volunteer Planting Day on Main Street in Valentine. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about tree and shrub planting, using water-wise plants in the landscape, and general planting how-to’s from representatives from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Over 1,200 shrubs and perennials and 25+ trees will be planted in the bumpouts at intersections and the remaining mid-block sidewalk planter locations to complete the finished look of Valentine’s reconstructed Main Street. All are welcome to come help leave their mark on Main Street and be a part of an exciting new chapter in Valentine, Nebraska’s history.

Mike and Kim Burge are the new owners and managers of KVSH Radio, 940 on your AM dial.

Mike was born and raised in Valentine and graduated from Valentine High School. Kim was raised on a cattle ranch northeast of Onida, in central South Dakota, and graduated from Sully Buttes High School. Oddly enough Mike was the only person at KVSH that manager at the time, Larry Russell, did not introduce Kim to during her initial interview.

The Sand Painters Art Club will send 17 works of art to the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs’ state art show. Best of Show is “Morning Roundup” graphite drawing by Chana Orton of Mills. Other art advancing on to state, “Norden Chute” acrylic painting also by Chana. “I Want to be a Cowboy” acrylic painting and “Green Colt” charcoal drawing by David Dorsey, “Stars Over the Niobrara” and “Teen in Wilbur Merch” photographs by Chris Mosner, “Sandhills Senescence” photograph by Jasmine Hoefs, and “Littoral Life” fiber collage by Jan Knispel all of Valentine. “”Dancing Color” and “Approaching Fall” oil paintings by Priscilla Portenier, “Morning Rush” and “Turkey Creek” oil paintings by Joan Swim both of Springview. “Sundown at the Old Place” and “Section Line Road” oil paintings by Rick Yusten of Gordon. “Bay At Work” charcoal and graphite drawing by Susan Reenders McNaught of Blunt, SD. “Early Morning” and “Technicolor Drive” pastels by Christine May (Chris Cernetisch) of Burke, SD. All these artworks that were entered in this local contest will be on display at the Valentine Public Library for the month of May and then the state representative art will compete in the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs’ state show in Columbus June 8, 9, and 10, 2023.
