Was it completely preposterous to try and grow grapes in the Sandhills?Possibly.Thisis,afterall, cattle country. But the grapevines were grown, their fruit harvested, and processed into wine at the Niobrara Valley Vineyard. In fact the wine became so popular, that the Nollette family has received many awards.

Western Governors University and Mid-Plains Community College announce partnership

Valentine – Western Governors University(WGU),anonprofit,fully online university, and Mid-Plains Community College (MPCC) have announced a new joint partnership that will provide students graduating with their associate degrees from any of MPCC’s seven campuses withanaffordablepathwayto earningtheirbachelor’sormaster’s degree from WGU. The agreement comes as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed by Gov. Pete Ricketts and WGU to expand access to affordable, highquality degree programs for the estimated 306,000 Nebraskans who have some college credits but no bachelor’s degree.

Property tax vs. schools

Every session of the legislature I introduce a resolution. Last session it was called LR13CA. It proposes a constitutional amendment to place a limit on how much property taxes can be used to fund public schools.

UNL for families: Reducing food waste

Reducing food waste can help individuals save approximately $370 per year. The average American family of four may be able to save close to $1,500 annually by preventing food waste. The USDA and the Environmental Protection Agency have a goal to cut our nation’s food waste by 50% by the year 2030. Food waste can occur along any part of the food chain. Consumers contribute to food waste through preparing more food than needed and throwing away the extra.

Nebraskans encouraged to prevent mosquito bites as West Nile Virus activity surges

Lincoln-The latest Vector-Borne Disease Surveillance report released on September 16 reported a high number of positive West Nile Virus (WNV) samples detected in Nebraska’s mosquito population. 73 positive mosquito pools have been detected out of 795 (9.2%) tested so far in the 2022 season. This is the highest number of positive mosquito pools since 2018.

SCC releases summer Dean’s List Southeast Community College in Nebraska has released its Dean’s List for the term recently completed on the Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford campuses. To be recognized on SCC’s Dean’s List, a student must complete at least six semester credit hours of the term with a minimum gradepoint average of 3.5.
