The Nebraska Regional Poison Center (NRPC) joined with the nation’s 54 other poison centers for National Poison Prevention Week from March 19-25, 2023. The theme this year was “When poison happens, Poison Centers are here for you.” A joint resolution requesting Poison Prevention Week was passed in the US Congress in 1961. Early in 1962 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the third week of March as National Poison Prevention Week. No matter the situation, Poison Centers are here to help.

NCC students join PTK honor society Approximately 70 students at Northeast Community College have qualified for membership in the Phi Theta Kappa, (PTK), Tau Chi Chapter during the spring semester. The organization’s mission is two-fold: recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming.

CHAPMAN, (AP) - Whooping cranes are beginning to join around 450,000 migrating sandhill cranes that have flocked to central Nebraska. Brice Krohn, president of the Crane Trust, said the arrival of the endangered whooping cranes is a big moment for researchers and fans from around the world who come to Nebraska for their annual migration, the Omaha World Herald reports.

Incidents/Arrests On 03/13/2023 at 10:52 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block of West Highway 20. A 56 year old Texas woman was cited for speeding.

A new Fire and Severe Weather Warning Siren has been installed in Thedford. The new Federal Signal Siren will nearly double the audible notification area of a previous obsolete system. Furthermore, the siren will have distinct tones for fire or severe weather significantly improving public safety. The system will be activated by Region 26 to alert firefighters of emergencies to include wildfires, structure fires, search and rescue operations, and motor vehicle accidents.

Work continues on the IN VALENTINE and IN VALENTINE UTILITIES projects. The detour on Cherry Street has been re-installed for the Highway 83 traffic with some changes.

The meetings have been going on for months to discuss a master plan; to peer into the future 20 years from now and elicit what area residents would like to see for their parks and recreational activities. Some are doable, others are in the dreaming phase but with enough funds and an affirmative “go ahead,” have every option to become viable amenities for the Valentine area.
