New three-digit suicide prevention Line, 988, goes live July 16

Lincoln - After two years of planning and preparation, the new three-digit suicide prevention line, 988, will go live on Saturday, July 16. In 2020, Congress designated the new 988 dialing code to operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

We’re getting the band back together and we need you! Mrs. Springer and Mrs. Rhoades would like to invite community members and band and flag corps members past and present to join them in playing in the Cherry County Fair Parade on August 11 at 7:00 p.m. Rehearsals will begin on July 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the high school band room. Practices will continue each Tuesday and Thursday evening for the next two weeks from 7:00-8:00 p.m. If you can’t make them all, we understand!! We’ll be playing a simple and familiar song!!

Scholarship Aims to Help Non-Traditional Students in Rural Nebraska

From EMT training to a nursing degree and other college credits, non-traditional students are getting the much-needed support to obtain their educational goals with the Nebraska Rural Radio Foundation Scholarship in Honor of Max & Eric Brown.

The Lakeview Church and community hall were full of activity last week as Prairie Light Youth Camp was held – it’s 19th year. The theme was Lava, Lava, Luau from Children’s Ministry. There was an average of 39 kids each day with an overall county of 59 kids ministered to. A youth team from Faith Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center, IA brought a team of nine youth and four adults, the First Baptist Church of Sioux Falls sent three adults, and Stein Christian Reformed Church from Stein, MN sent an awesome 1 man team. Kitty VanderWey organized much of the camp, assisted by Sadie and Mikah Vanderwey, Marvanne Logterman, Heidi and River Doyle and Lily and Ivy Jackson, and the Walkling family helped with the clean up. The youth group did several service projects while here also, including stripping out floor and ceiling tiles from the local orphanage house, and cleaning up the grounds and painting play equipment and picnic tables at the playground at Little Horse Circle. All the kids and adults had a great time, and busy week.

Remembering the 2012 Niobrara River Valley Fires

On the evening of July 19, 2012, a lightning storm rolled through the canyons south of the Niobrara River near Johnstown that ignited an area of trees in a canyon of the Niobrara River Valley. Innumerous storms frequent Nebraska throughout the summer season, each bringing their share of lightning, thunder, hail, wind and other methods of destruction.
