Gallino sworn in to state VFW position

Jim Edwards, Commander of the Valentine VFW Post 5239 and Vince Lopez, Commander of the Nebraska VFW District 11 attended the annual Nebraska Department of VFW convention in Kearney, June 11-12, 2022, where they observed the nomination, election, and swearing in of Rex Gallino to the Nebraska Department of Surgeon position, one of five judiciary positions governing the State VFW programs.

Cherry County 4-H 2022 Livestock Judging Contest results

Doug Smith from the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture (NCTA) in Curtis, was the clinician and judge for this year’s competition. Classes included breeding beef, market beef, market lamb, market goat, dairy goat and market swine. Intermediates and Seniors were required to give oral reasons and there was a question class. Craig O’Kief served as a judge for intermediate oral reasons. The following additional individuals provided animals and assistance for the contest: Craig O’Kief, Brent Nollette, Bullis Creek Ranch - Brawner Family, Stec Family, Sexson Family, and Christen Larson.

Work on main ramp area at Merritt will cause temporary closures

Users of the Main Ramp Area at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area should be aware of repairs there June 22-24 that will result in temporary closures. Water draining from the pullthrough near the ramp area has caused erosion undermining the sidewalk attached to the boat ramp, and immediate repairs are needed.

Troopers locate missing Indiana girl near Kearney

JUNE 17, 2022, KEARNEY — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have located a missing 13-year-old girl from Indiana and arrested a Colorado man following a traffic stop on Interstate 80 Wednesday, June, 15, 2022.

Be aware when fertilizing your perennials Perennial flowers, ground covers and grasses don’t need a lot of fertilization and in fact some may react negatively. Overfertilized perennials may bolt, producing excessive soft growth instead of more flowers.

Pastor’s Appreciation Day cook-out to be held June 26

It’s a special day to celebrate area pastors, Sunday, June 26, 2022, at the Valentine City Park. The celebration will have a cookout that begins at 5:00 p.m., with the following provided: hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, lemonade, and water. There is no admission, and everyone is invited. Free-will donations are optional.

University of Sioux Falls honors spring graduates Erin Cheney of Shelton graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Media Studies from University of Sioux Falls. Cheney and over 400 students were celebrated for graduation in the spring commencement ceremony.
