    Three Little Legends take fourth in first triathlon

    Brandi Daugherty Three Valentine Middle School athletes took on a new challenge Sunday, August 23, 2026, competing in their first triathlon and finishing fourth overall at the inaugural Kheya Ki Triathlon in Rosebud. Brothers Wade Daugherty, 13, and Duke Daugherty, 11, teamed up with their friend River Ruby, 11, to form a three-person team called Three Little Legends.

    VMS Battles the Eagles

    The Valentine seventh and eighth grade football team traveled to O’Neill on Thursday, September 10, 2026 for their first game of the season. The team battled in the first half and held the Eagles scoreless.

    Under the September sky, community members gathered Saturday at Third and Main Street in Valentine to celebrate more than a new mural. They gathered to celebrate the people, stories, heritage and connections that make Valentine and Cherry County a special place to call home.

    “Wherewereyouwhentheworld stopped turnin’ that September day?” Twenty-five years have passed since that September morning when the world changed forever. Under a clear blue Nebraska sky, members of the Cherry County community gathered at the Valentine Fire Department on Hall Street to remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders, military members, and countless others whose lives were forever changed by the attacks.

    Lincoln, Neb., September 4, 2026 —2026 was the largest wildfire year on record in Nebraska, with over 1 million acres of rangeland burned. The Morrill Fire, which occurred in March in the southwestern Sandhills, was the largest single fire event on record for the state. As the growing season has progressed, perennial vegetation has begun to recover over much of the area, even with limited rainfall reducing the amount of plant growth and delaying growth of the native plants until later spring.
