Earl Walter Shelbourn Jr., known simply as “Junior,” passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at Cherry County Hospital in Valentine, Nebraska. He was 78 years old.
Junior was born on March 13, 1948, in Valentine to Earl Pont Shelbourn and Betty Connor Shelbourn, following the death of his father before his birth. He was raised by his mother, Betty, and her husband, Joe Sullivan. He spent his childhood in Wood Lake, before moving to Valentine during his high school years. A lifelong resident of Nebraska’s Sandhills, he maintained a deep attachment to the land and the people that shaped him.
At Valentine High School, Junior distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete in football, basketball, and track. His athletic ability, determination, competitive spirit, and work ethic remained defining characteristics throughout his life.
Like many young men of his generation, Junior answered his country’s call and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His service came at a personal cost, but he rarely spoke of his sacrifices. Those who knew him understood that his patriotism was expressed more through quiet action than words. He remained a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars throughout his life.
After returning home, Junior devoted his career to serving Cherry County, working for many years as the County Foreman. He earned a reputation as a dependable, hardworking man who could always be counted on to lend a hand. Whether on the job or helping a neighbor, he believed that when something needed to be done, you simply did it.
Retirement did little to slow him down. One of the many ways he served the community was by voluntarily repainting Valentine’s fire hydrants. Using his own time and labor and purchasing the paint himself, he quietly improved the appearance of his community without asking for recognition.
As one local resident wrote in a letter to the editor, “We need more people like him.” Those words captured what so many in Cherry County already knew.
Junior found some of his greatest happiness outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing in the Nebraska Sandhills and looked forward to annual fishing trips to Alaska with close friends. He appreciated simple pleasures, honest work, and time spent with family and friends.
Junior raised his sons, Brian and Brad, with their mother, Deanna.
On October 24, 2013, he married Bernice “Bernie” Fernen in Hot Springs, SD. Together they shared many years of companionship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Pont Shelbourn and Betty Connor Shelbourn; stepfather, Joe Sullivan; sister, Betty Jean Shelbourn, who died in childhood.
He is survived by his wife, Bernie; sons, Brian Shelbourn and his wife, Danielle Shelbourn, and Brad Shelbourn and his wife, Niqui Shelbourn; grandchildren, Reaghan Shelbourn, Parker Shelbourn, and Peyton Shelbourn; siblings, Patti Maire, Mick Sullivan, and Patrick Sullivan; and many extended family members, fellow veterans, friends, and neighbors whose lives he touched.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, July 28, at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine, followed by a celebration of his life at the Vets Club in Valentine at 11:00 a.m.
Junior will be remembered not for seeking attention, but for quietly making his community a better place. Through his military service, his years working for Cherry County, his dedication to fellow veterans, and the many acts of service he performed without expectation of reward, he left an enduring mark on the Nebraska Sandhills. His legacy is one of humility, perseverance, service, and a life well lived.
