Ronald E. Scranton, 88

Ronald Scranton passed away December 4, 2022 at Hospice House in Rapid City, SD. He was born in Antelope County, Nebraska on January 28, 1934 to Hattie and Ed Scranton. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1952 where he played football, basketball and was a member of National Honor Society. He went on to earn college credits from Hastings College, BHTC in Spearfish, SD and earned a degree in Business from the University of South Dakota School of Business in 1964.

Ron married Alice Mayer in October of 1954 and created a life together that spanned more than 67 years. Ron was a practicing CPA for many years including nearly 20 years in Valentine, where he operated his own accounting firm. He was an aspiring entrepreneur, and along with his wife Alice, operated several small businesses including Piesano’s Pizza in Rapid City. Ron and Alice didn’t let grass grow too long under their feet, moving 57 times during their life together.

Ron was accomplished wood carver. He began his love for whittling as a boy and honed his skills over his lifetime. Many of his creations won awards at county fairs in Nebraska and South Dakota. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his many friends, playing bridge and cheering for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joyce Schlueter and wife Alice.

Survivors include son Steve Scranton and wife Cindy of Sidney; daughter Jodi and husband Allen of Norfork, AR; daughter Joyce Scranton of Rapid City, SD; daughter Jeri and husband Keith of Dayton, OH; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two stepgreat grandchildren, special family friend Lori Willmott of Rapid City, SD, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service celebrating the lives of both Ron and his wife Alice is planned for next spring.
