Stanley Keith Lucas was born to Shirley “Sy” Lucas and Lena (Thomsen) Lucas at the family farm near Crookston, on July 27, 1932, joining a sister, Shirley. The family moved from farm to farm, so he went to 10 different grade schools. He graduated from Crookston High School in 1951. He worked at neighboring farms for Chicoine Implement, Luther Tractor, Watts Funeral Home based in Valentine, and a seismograph crew before enlisting in the Army during the Korean Conflict, when he was stationed at White Sands, New Mexico.

Stan married Gayleen Scholtes on June 6, 1955, at St. Mary’s Church in Nenzel. They lived in Valentine, then Tulsa, OK, where he graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics, and finally in Hayward, CA, where they raised their three children, Kathy, Blaine, and Janet. He worked as an aircraft mechanic for Beechcraft until he became a partner in Foothill Locksmiths with his father and later with his son, Blaine, and then grandchildren Dustin and Katelyn, working the family business until his retirement. Foothill Locksmiths is now a Hayward Area Historic Business.

He was a member of St. Bede Catholic Church, Past Grand Knight and 50-year/lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Hayward Council 1615. He was also a lifetime member of Hayward Eagles 0675, American Legion 0117, NRA, and Associated Locksmiths of America.

He enjoyed family vacations camping, fishing, cruising with his wife and friends, and driving across the country. At home he proved “old farmers never die; they just spade away,” raising roses, tomatoes, and other vegetables. He liked working in his workshop, visiting with neighbors, community service, caring for the neighborhood cats, and especially watching his children, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren grow up.

Stanley Lucas died on June 17, 2023, at the age of 90. Visitation and rosary services will be held Thursday, July 13, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Holy Sepulchre, in Hayward. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 14, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bede Church, in Hayward, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, and reception will follow.

Stan was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Gayleen; as well as his parents, Sy and Lena Lucas, step-mother Clemo Lucas, parents-in-law Frank Scholtes and Katherine and Carl Ritter, brotherin- laws Robert Elliott, Roland Ohlmann, and Merlin Scholtes.

He is survived by his children, Kathy (Jeff) Kernan, Blaine (Dolores) Lucas, and Janet (Steve) Webster; his grandchildren, Dustin (Denise), Jessica, Katelyn, Julia, Laura (Ryan), and Kayla (Justin); great-grandchildren; his sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Dick Shamis, sister-in-law Kathleen Scholtes, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
