Dennis Arthur Ahrens, 84

Dennis Arthur Ahrens was born at home in Ewington Township, Jackson County, MN, on October 4, 1941, to Arthur Reinhold Ahrens and Jeannette Elvira Olney. From his earliest days, Dennis was surrounded by faith, family, and the quiet strength of rural life, hard work, and community. He treasured his siblings, Dave, Betty, Nan, and Dot, sharing with them a rare closeness that lasted his entire life.

Dennis was baptized into Christ on October 19, 1941, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Okabena, MN. On June 5, 1955, he affirmed his faith through confirmation. He was a dedicated member and servant of Grace Lutheran Church in Valentine, NE, for over 40 years. His confirmation verse remained an enduring comfort and lifelong promise: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” — Hebrews 13:5 (NKJV) Dennis graduated from Heron Lake High School on May 29, 1959. He earned an associate degree in 1967 from Immanuel Lutheran College in Eau Claire, WI, and a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Mankato State College in 1969.

On June 14, 1969, Dennis married Ruth Miriam Nolting. Together they built a life rooted in faith, service, devotion, and perseverance. Dennis lovingly cared for Ruth in both sickness and in health. While Ruth preceded Dennis in death, her love, strength, and memory remained close to him throughout his life.

Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.” — Psalm 91:14 (Warrior’s Psalm | ESV) Dennis’ military career was a deeply cherished part of his life. In February 1960, he joined the United States Air Force. He served three years as an aerospace ground equipment repairman in Soesterburg, Holland. In 1973, he joined the Army National Guard. For many years, he commanded a radar section in Battery E, 151 Field Artillery in Anoka, MN. Dennis achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, a rank reserved for rare, technical expertise. During his 34 years of service, he also completed active duty tours in Libya, Japan, Bosnia, and Kosovo. Throughout his military career, he received many honors including the Joint Service Commendation Medal.

Dennis devoted his early civilian professional life to education, teaching at both religious and public schools in Wisconsin, South Carolina, Minnesota, and Nebraska. Dennis was also a farmer, owned and operated his own construction business, and was known by family and friends as a true jack of all trades. He believed in responsibility, discipline, hard work, and quietly encouraging others. He carried himself with humility and determination, qualities that remained with him throughout his life.

The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” — Psalm 121:8 (ESV) Together, Dennis and Ruth raised their daughters, Marit, Alana, Kendra, and Stephanie. He was deeply proud of his family and found joy in watching his children and grandchildren grow. Whether teaching, serving, traveling, or simply sitting quietly with loved ones, Dennis valued the steady blessings of each day. He developed a softness of character that only a man with four daughters could truly cultivate.

On September 28, 2013, Dennis married Carol Louise Hammer. Carol brought renewed joy and companionship into his life. Together they shared a season filled with faith, conversation, laughter, and comfort. Dennis deeply loved Carol’s caring spirit and warmth.

Family and friends will remember Dennis’ calm presence, warm smile, strong sense of duty, thoughtful nature, mischievous humor, and enduring faith. He carried both hardship and joy with quiet resilience through his final breath on May 24, 2026.
