Cherry County 4-H teamed up with Leo Brinda Unit #90 American Legion Auxiliary again this year to conduct a quilt raffle to raise funds for the Quilts of Valor community service project. Over 100 quilts have been awarded to area veterans over the last few years and the raffle helps participants cover the costs of fabric, batting, quilting services, and other supplies.

The Valentine 8U Rookies team ended their 2024 season with a 7-4 record and a second place finish in the 16th annual Bob Haley Memorial Rookies Classic in Winner, SD June 29 - 30. The Rookies beat Lyman on Saturday with a score of 1-0 with a walk off double by Kade Arganbright bringing in Beckett Walking to score the one run for Valentine.

It’s an honor to be a Girl Scout and even more so when working hard and reaching a goal. Three local young ladies worked through their Bronze Award, and continued on, recently earning their Silver Award for work done at Ecology Park.

The sun had already set Sunday night, yet there was still a glow in the sky, and shadows were long and deepening. A vehicle pulled up to the newly set memorials in front of the Cherry County Justice Center and a lone person got out.

The exterior design of Valentine’s City Hall was completed in 2022. Daugherty Construction did the concrete work in front of the building in May of 2023. Mid-West Plastering & Construction was hired to work on the north wall in September of 2023 and he finished most of the work in April, 2024.

Governor Jim Pillen stopped at Mid Plains Community College June 27, 2024, to visit with attendees about a special session for the Legislature later this month to reduce property taxes. He asked those in attendance to engage every senator in the unicameral about attending; needing 33 votes for the Pillen Plan to succeed and help Nebraskans. He said, “it’s a living, breathing, plan,” and asked for feed back, and solid ideas. He’s serious about helping fix a broken tax system. His proposal includes taxing services that are not currently being taxed, along with taxing goods such as vaping products, cigarettes, fountain pop, and candy - to name a few - essentially, a broad based sales tax. The current budget receives $5.3 billion in property tax, $3.7 billion in income tax, and $2.3 billion in state tax.
